Psychological Testing
Learning challenges, behavioral difficulties, or developmental concerns can develop from an early age. You may notice certain behaviors in your child or yourself that indicate a need for further investigation, or be notified by your child’s daycare provider, school, or pediatrician that an evaluation is needed. Knowing what type of testing is best as well as how to initiate the process with a trusted clinician can be challenging. We are here to help.
Through the use of psychological testing, a clinician can assess, diagnose, and guide the treatment of various cognitive, emotional, and behavioral challenges that you or a loved one may face. At our practice, we offer a comprehensive range of psychological testing services tailored to meet the needs of children, adolescents, and adults. Our goal is to provide you with a deeper understanding of yourself or your child, paving the way for personalized and effective interventions that foster personal and educational growth.
Why is Psychological Testing Important?
Psychological testing provides objective data and insights that help clinicians better understand an individual's mental and emotional functioning. It can help identify underlying conditions that may affect a person's learning, behavior, or mental health. This clarity often brings relief to individuals and families who have struggled without answers. It also helps educators, physicians, and therapists develop treatment plans and accommodations that help individuals overcome obstacles and achieve greater success in their daily lives. For children, psychological testing can clarify learning challenges, behavioral difficulties, or developmental concerns, guiding parents and educators to create the best learning and support environment. For adults, testing can uncover factors affecting daily functioning, emotional well-being, and interpersonal relationships, helping to enhance life satisfaction and productivity.
Our Psychological Testing Services
We offer a wide variety of psychological testing services designed to assess cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. Here is an overview of the testing services we provide:
ADHD Testing for Children and Adults
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed neurodevelopmental disorders, affecting both children and adults. Our ADHD testing services are designed to provide a thorough assessment of attention, impulse control, and executive functioning.
What Does ADHD Testing Involve?
- Parent/Teacher Questionnaires (for children): Collect observations from caregivers and teachers about a child's behavior in different settings
- Self-Report Measures (for adults): Assess patterns of attention, focus, and impulsivity in everyday situations
- Neuropsychological Tests: Evaluate attention span, working memory, and executive functioning
Who Can Benefit?
Children who display symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity at school and home may need testing to confirm an ADHD diagnosis. Adults who have long struggled with time management, organization, or concentration can also benefit from ADHD testing to understand their challenges.
Purpose and Usefulness:
- Provides a definitive diagnosis of ADHD
- Guides decisions about medication and behavioral therapy
- Helps educators and employers provide necessary accommodations
- Clarifies differences between ADHD symptoms and other conditions, such as anxiety or learning disabilities
The Process of Psychological Testing
Our psychological testing process involves several key steps to ensure that we gather accurate and meaningful information:
-
Initial Consultation: We start with a phone consultation to understand your concerns and determine the appropriate testing battery. You will speak directly with a licensed clinical psychologist who can answer specific questions and explain the process and timeline from start to finish prior to the start of testing.
-
Assessment Sessions: Testing may involve one or multiple sessions, depending on the testing needed. Sessions include a combination of standardized tests, interviews, and observations. They may be virtual or in person.
-
Scoring and Interpretation: Your clinician will score and interpret the results to create a comprehensive report in a timely manner.
-
Feedback Session: Your psychologist will meet with you to review the findings, discuss the implications, and provide personalized recommendations.
Common Questions About Psychological Testing
-
How Long Does Psychological Testing Take? The duration of psychological testing varies based on the type of assessment. Some evaluations may be completed in a few hours, while others may require multiple sessions over several days. We ensure the process is as smooth and efficient as possible.
-
Is Psychological Testing Covered by Insurance? Some psychological testing services are covered by insurance, especially if they are deemed medically necessary. We are not in-network providers with any insurance plans, which means that you are responsible for payment for psychological testing received at our practice. We are happy to provide you with documentation to submit to your insurance provider for third party reimbursement or assist you in understanding your benefits.
-
Are there benefits to paying out of pocket for psychological testing? Yes. Paying privately (out of pocket) ensures that you can secure an appointment for psychological testing quickly, receive a thorough report with recommendations in a timely manner, and control who the findings are shared with. Insurance companies do not reimburse for all types of psychological testing and may take up to 4 months to reimburse clinicians for their work. This creates a limited number of clinicians available to perform psychological testing and may delay the scoring, interpretation, and feedback provided. When searching for a clinician who accepts insurance, you may encounter a waitlist to secure a testing appointment between 3-12 months. This does not include the amount of time it requires to score and interpret the results. Our psychologists understand the importance of you or your child’s success in school, at work, in relationships, and other aspects of life. Payment options are available.
-
How Should I Prepare for Testing? It’s helpful to explain to children that psychological testing is not like a school test—it’s about understanding how their brain works. To prepare for testing, come well-rested and with any necessary paperwork or medical records will make the process smoother.
-
Are the Results Confidential? Yes, the results of psychological testing are confidential and protected by privacy laws. We will only share information with your consent, except in cases where disclosure is required by law.
